The shrine of Our Lady of Loreto is located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, three hours from Rome. It is the third largest shrine to Mary in Europe, next to Lourdes and Fatima. The ministry of the shrine is the hospitality shown to pilgrims especially through the sacrament of penance.The tradition of the shrine at Loreto goes back to the year 1291. As the last of the crusaders returned to Western Europe they brought with them a number of relics, objects of devotion and remembrances of holy shrines. It happened that the dwelling of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the house which both tradition and Christian devotion had maintained as the site of the appearance of the archangel Gabriel and therefore the Incarnation of our Savior, was moved from Nazareth to Christian Europe. The house arrived at Loreto on December 10, 1294.

The holy house of Mary at Loreto has been preserved by our fathers and mothers in the faith to serve for generations as a reminder of the faith of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of her love of God in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. We, too, here in Foxfield Colorado, are called to be homes, dwellings, and tabernacles of the Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The basilica is known for enshrining the house in which the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed by some Catholics to have lived.One of the holiest and most popular pilgrimage destinations in Italy is Loreto, located on the East Coast of Italy. Tradition tells us that this is the house where our Blessed Mother was conceived and born, grew up, and where the Archangel Gabriel appeared and asked her to become the Mother of God. The story of how the Holy House ended up here is an interesting one but not well documented. There are two versions to the story, and you are free to believe either one.With the imminent fall of the Holy Land to the Turks, the Holy House itself was in danger.In the traditional story we are told that the angels transported the home from Nazareth to Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia) in 1291 and the Blessed Virgin Mary actually appeared there and many miracles were reported. The house was again transported to the hilltop town of Loreto, Italy in December of 1294. Another version of the story tells of a wealthy family in the Holy Land, the Angeli Family, who paid to have the house dismantled and then reassembled in Italy. The name Angeli is translated as “angel” in both Latin and Italian.
The Holy House of Loreto (in Italian, “Santa Casa di Loreto”) is the house where Mary was born and the site of the Annunciation. The Holy House is in Loreto, in the Italian Province of Ancona. According to pious tradition, Mary’s house in Nazareth was flown by angels to Loreto, Italy in 1294, after a stop in Croatia, what was then Yugoslavia. This miracle is often referred to as “the Miracle of the Holy House of Loreto”. This great Marian shrine is also known as the House of Nazareth, and it also holds the beautiful statue of the Madonna of Loreto. More than fifty (50) Popes have made pilgrimages to the house in the hills of central Italy. Tradition states that this is the house in which Mary first prayed the Magnificat, Jesus grew to manhood, and where the Holy Family lived. This house now lies within the grand Basilica of the Holy House (in Italian, “Basilica della Santa Casa”) and has been one of the most famous Marian Shrines for Catholic Pilgrimages since the 13th century. The feast day of Our Lady and the Holy House of Loreto is on December 10th each year.In June 2019 Pope Francis declared 2020 the Jubilee Year for Air travelers and Pilgrims to Shrine of Loreto. Our Lady of Loreto was named the patron Saint of Aviation and Aviators by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. Pilgrims who visit the Shrine in the Jubilee Year can attain a Plenary Indulgence and witness the opening of the Holy Door. The Jubilee Year will start on December 8, 2019, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and conclude on December 10th, 2021 the feast of Our Lady of Loreto. (Due to the global pandemic’s effect on travel, Pope Francis extended the Jubilee Year). On October 31, 2019, Pope Francis decreed that the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto become an Optional Memorial that is to be included in the Roman Calendar, liturgical books, and Masses going forward. Many historical figures, Saints, and Pope’s have visited the Holy Shrine, and it remains a place of prayer for young people deliberating about vocations.
